The construction work was started in 1550 and was completed in 1557. The mosque is modeled in part of style of Hagia Sophia. Unfortunately this great Mosque was ravaged by a fire in 1660. It was restored in 19th century but was again destroyed by World War The architecture visitors see today was restored in 1956. It has become one of the most popular sights in Istanbul and is one of the most visited land mark by those taking Istanbul flights. The main mosque is 59 meters high and 58 meters in width, and the courtyard at the Süleymaniye is of exceptional grandeur. The thing visitors like the most about this building is its main Dome that is 53 meters high and has a diameter of 27.25 meters, and its 10 galleries within its minarets.
